Goodwood Festival of Speed, 2010

5 07 2010

I’m back. I’m sunburnt. I’m knackered.
Great weekend. To be honest, it doesn’t hurt if a kind friend has taken all your camping gear down in advance, and gone the extra mile with a 5m-a-side event shelter, a sofa, a fridge and a decent stereo for me to abuse.

In retrospect, driving 500 miles in rare blazing UK sunshine with roof down and no sunscreen wasn’t the wisest move, but it seems to have worked out OK in the end.
I took nearly 500 photos, which I’ve done a quick cull on and dumped to the web here:

From a Mazda point of view, there’s the Mazda stand including a Le Mans in mint condition, and the MX5 NC Superlight both on the hillclimb and up close after I got my grubby hands over it in the paddock after a run. Note the no-messing interior cage and door bars on this concept.
Also got a couple of shops of a mk1 RX7 rally car, which was something else.

Aside from that, what did we see? Not quite sure where to start: most of the current F1 grid, craziness at the rally stage – from Paddy Hopkirk in a Mini to an angry Lancia Stratos to current WRC cars, a ridiculous quantity of vintage stuff and the Supercar paddock…and all manner of wonders that I’ve missed out.

I’ll slice and dice the photos properly later.

Special thanks go to Wayne @ Onestop Roadsters, for changing the bottom rad hose at 8pm the night before I set off, at no notice and for free.
Special boos and hisses to Stanley Green Service Station for doing nothing bar removing and refitting the leaky hose and charging me £76.

Oh, and if you’re wondering if you should go to the FoS next year? Yes, you should. There are nutters driving HF Integrales from Poland to get there – it’s that good. We met a guy at the Pimm’s bar who’d flown in from Sydney. Where else do you get a stately home garden party with a V12 soundtrack, hands-on with every automotive object of lust that you can think of, with the Red Arrows and an Avro Vulcan fly-past with bomb-bay doors-open thrown in?

Good times.
